Dressing for the UK weather is tricky at the best of times. But when summer is handing the seasonal baton over to autumn is arguably when UK climates are the most difficult to dress for. The first few weeks of September see the end of the summer sun without plummeting temperatures meaning it’s too warm for your big winter coat but not warm enough to leave the house in shorts and a t-shirt.
The key lies in minimal layering, and we think it’s actually one of the best times of the year for fashion. Here are a few options if you’re a guy in need of help dressing for the UK’s awkward autumn stage.
Cardigans
Cardigans offer a versatile way to add an extra layer without being too warm. While this may not sound like the most fashionable of choices, knitwear is well and truly back on trend after a few years out of the game.
F1 star and fashion icon Lewis Hamilton chose to arrive at the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix sporting a thin blue cardigan that left his torso exposed. And if an old-fashioned knitted cardigan is good enough for him, it’s good enough for us.
When it comes to choosing an autumn cardigan, it depends on your plans and budget. With the knitwear trend in full flow, everyone from high street brands to designer brands will be stocking options.
Chunky, patterned cardigans can provide an edgier look if you need an outfit for a brunch date or morning coffee. Thin, plain, neutral-coloured cardigans offer a smarter option that will be both office and weather-appropriate.
Shackets
When it’s too cold for a shirt but too warm for a jacket, combine the two. Shackets, as they are now called, or overshirts refer to long sleeve shirts that are worn without being buttoned up, the same way a jacket would be worn.
Faux wool shackets provide a simple yet smart look and can be paired with a plain t-shirt and a pair of jeans. Colours like grey, beige and navy can all be paired with blue and black jeans to provide multiple outfits from a handful of items.
Corduroy overshirts and shackets provide a more casual look. Pairing with a pair of nylon cargo pants and trainers is a great way to put together a streetwear outfit that will keep you warm if heading out in the evening.
Tracksuit
It might not meet your office dress code, but a men’s full tracksuit is often the perfect choice around this time of year. Matching bottoms and sweatshirts offer a timeless look that’s perfect for staying both warm and comfortable if embarking on a fresh autumn morning stroll.
If you’re heading out for a full day, tracksuit bottoms with a zip-up hoodie offer a little more versatility and allow you to strip down to a t-shirt should the temperature rise.
Most sportswear brands will offer high-quality options when it comes to tracksuits although it’s worth shopping around the many independent fashion brands that are starting to pop up if you’re looking for a less popular, often cheaper, option.
